How to delete a file which contains a virus?
I did a Virus Scan and it told me that a particular file had a virus on it. Every time I try to delete it it doesn’t let me — it sort of freezes my computer for a bit and then comes back. How can I delete this file? Basically, everytime I highlight it to delete it is blocks everything. Help!!???

if a file won’t delete it is usually because it is being used at that time
you need to close the virus or program or whatever is using it, then you should be able to delete it
if you can’t do this, find a friend or someone who can
ps. in windows, shift+delete to delete permanently and not send to recycle bin

hi,
you cant delete virus manually. you need to have good anti virus software without that it wont be possible. if you install good anti virus it will detect it and remove it automatically or if your current anti virus is just prompting the file than please update it or put this file as quarntine list.
thanks

What kind of a virus scanner u have that can’t delete it? Throw it away and get something solid like kaspersky 2009!
Well, actually most of the worms(not viruses) can be deleted manually. Go to task manager, right click on the worm process & select end process tree. Then go through command prompt(start->run->cmd) and delete it. Win explorer generally will not work if the worm creates autorun scripts.
To remove startup entries, use ccleaner. -

Try to boot in safe mode.
What timmyg said is probably what the problem is. It is being used.
When you boot in safe mode, all unnecessary programs will not run. More than likely this file is not a system file, so in safe mode, it won’t be used.
I also suggest downloading and running Avast! Anitivirus first. If that’s not what your using, it will scan and find it, then remove it for you. So you can avoid doing any harm to your computer by accident. -

Write down the entire file path to the file.
(ie c:windowssystemfile.ext)
Start you computer in safe mode with no networking.
In the command prompt window type del /f filepath
And hit enter.Safe mode
Restart the machine.
Press F8 before the Windows StartUp screen appears.
The boot choices menu should appear.
Press the number for the safe mode option.Command Prompt
Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt -

If you have a decent anti virus program and it is uptodate it should not just tell you that you have a virus but it should deal with it. Is this just a freebie that you run sometimes to check on your computer but that you have to pay for if you want it to deal with the problems? I would download one of the free anti virus programs like AVG or AVAST, or I personally cannot fault Windows LiveOneCare, you can do a complete scan from their site without paying, though of course it might pay you to get the subscription version. I have it on several computers and in conjunction with my Super AntiSpyware never have problems. After all if you are running Windows or Vista and Microsoft applications, who better to look after them than Microsoft, i.e. Windows Live OneCare themselves.

Firstly if you think you have a virus, use your internet security such as ‘AVG, or Norton’ & run a full system scan. If the security program picks this file up then usually they give the option of quarantining the file & cleaning it. Allowing you to keep the file. But once the file is cleaned, then you can just send it to your waste bin & delete it from there.
Hope this helps.

You may want to search on Google on specific instructions for the specific virus you are dealing with. If it is a critical system file, you want to be careful that you don’t delete it, or it will prevent your computer from working right. Try using another anti-virus program and see if it can clean the virus out.
If the file is locked (i.e. you can’t delete it using normal means), one solution is to use something like Unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ . It will allow you to delete the file on the next reboot.
