How to attack a computer and disable operating system without using a virus?
Hi
I have to do a college project where I have to find 4 ways to destroy an OS, but we are using virtual machines so we cant use virus’s in case the physical machine gets infected.

Chris thanks for the help, but no it is genuinely a college assignment, the virtual machine we are using is vmware and the OS is windows xp.
and im only in 1st year of college which is why im asking for help and im not a computer genius lol

you do not say if you can physically get at the target computer – I will assume that you can
1. erase system files on HDD and/or leave magnet on HDD casing
2. send voltage spike down power line (or fry CPU with mains lead straight to mobo)
3. sabotage RAM socket (or fry RAM with high voltage)
4. reset BIOS (or disable backup cell)

…You can’t use a virus under the virtual machines, to prevent the physical machine gets infected….uh… and its a college project. right.
dude, if you want to know how to destroy an OS of some friend of yours, just ask that. I mean, someone studying something computer related, that has to do a project using virtual machines, won’t be asking this. (to be fair, yes, Im aware a virus escaping virtual machines is theoretically possible, but he hasn’t specified what virtual machine software is, what the host OS is and what the guest OS is. and anyone on a career computer-related would have an idea of how to destroy an OS. he is not computer-related career? so destroying an OS is for what, psychology, getting the excitement of OS destruction? marketing, so, somehow he learns to promote antiviruses by destroying OSes? a lawyer! so he can feel on the shoes of his computer-criminal clients! XD

here are some ideas, do your “project” with them:
assuming the guest os is windows:
1 execute regedit.exe and delete all you can there
2 delete all you can from windows/system32
3 execute compmgmt.msc and click disk management, then have fun deleting all partitions there
4 reinstall windows and stop the process at the middle!assuming the guest os is linux:
1 add 1 to the kernel line on grub, that is gonna give root, then do dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
2 …or just do rm -Rf /boot
3 have fun with /etc files !
4 wanna make it more… subtle? get root and add a cronjob that does the
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1the dd thing by the way, can be fixed with “testdisk”, just in case you feel guilty at the middle of the project.
Ow! and if this is all real, and you are going to do this on a real virtual machine, well, just deleting the virtual machine is enough XD
just “rm virtualmachine.vmdk” and is destroyed
@jim johnson: XD lmao, so this friend don’t wanna use viruses to prevent damage on the physical machine, and you are suggesting things like frying the RAM and destroying the harddisk using magnets… hm, Why it didn’t crossed my mind? XD

glad you’d take it fine . well my suggestions are real; you can really screw an OS by doing those things. and jokes apart, are you sure that is the only thing needed? I mean, don’t you have any requirement like doing it stealth or something? -
